Lenoir-Rhyne’s Matthew Raybould has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s golf freshman of the year, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

Raybould started in every event for the Bears this season, shooting an adjusted scoring average of 73.83. He was Lenoir-Rhyne’s leading golfer at the Newberry Invitational, Battle at Hilton Head and the Bearcat Golf Classic. He shot a season-low 66 during the Donald Ross Invitational, finishing in a tie for fourth at 7-under.

Raybould and senior Brad Robinson both earned SAC honorable mention honors. Robinson had four top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Donald Ross Invitational.

Lenoir-Rhyne will compete in the SAC Championship from April 14-16 in Camden, S.C.

L-R men’s tennis holds off Anderson

The Lenoir-Rhyne men’s tennis team closed out its home schedule Thursday with a narrow 4-3 victory over Anderson, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

The No. 33 Bears (17-3 overall, 8-2 South Atlantic Conference) earned the doubles point after getting wins from the teams of Mauricio Hernandez and Shane O’Dea (7-5) and Paul Lenz and Rhodri Atkinson (7-5). In singles play, Tales Miranda (6-2, 6-4), O’Dea (6-0, 6-2) and Lewis Scott (6-1, 6-2) also earned points to secure the win.

"It was another incredible day for the men," coach Tom Rees said via the release. "They saved a match point which ended up being the difference today. Anderson is a great squad and we had to play some tough tennis to get by them. I couldn't be prouder of the men and their outstanding regular season."

Lenoir-Rhyne posted a 10-0 record on its home court at the YMCA of Catawba Valley this season. The Bears enter the SAC tournament on a five-match winning streak and will host a quarterfinal match Monday with the opponent and time still to be determined.

L-R women’s tennis breezes past Trojans

The Lenoir-Rhyne women’s tennis team celebrated senior day with a 6-1 victory over Anderson on Thursday, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

The No. 45 Bears (17-4 overall, 7-3 South Atlantic Conference) earned the doubles point after the teams of Emily Murchland and Marta Escanero Funes (6-2), Diana Babinets and Gemma Southwick (6-2) and Lucy Whelan and Sanne Janssen (6-2) swept the doubles matches. In singles play, Southwick (6-4, 6-2), Babinets (6-4, 6-3), Escanero Funes (6-3, 7-5), Ally Garofoli (6-2, 6-7, 6-2) and Murchland (8-3) also earned points in the win.

"I was so impressed with the ladies today," coach Tom Rees said via the release. "We gave an assured performance against a historically strong Anderson team. Our ladies deserve all the credit for such a wonderful regular season and I'm so proud of each and every one of them."

Lenoir-Rhyne will host a SAC tournament quarterfinal match Monday with the opponent and time still to be determined.

L-R baseball postpones Friday night game

The Lenoir-Rhyne baseball team postponed Friday night’s home game against Wingate, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

A make-up date has yet to be announced. The Bears and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at Bears Field, with the senior class being honored before the first game.
