Greensboro will be abuzz with athletes from throughout the state this weekend as the NCHSAA will hold its state track and field championship for all classifications.

The 2A and 3A state meets for both boys and girls will take place concurrently Friday beginning at 10 a.m. The 1A and 4A classifications are scheduled for Saturday. All events are held at North Carolina A&T’s Aggie Stadium.

A total of 76 athletes from the three local conferences – Northwestern 3A/4A, Northwestern Foothills 2A and South Fork 2A – are scheduled to compete in individual track and field events plus 26 relay teams. Twenty of the 22 schools from the area will have at least one participant going to Greensboro.

Here is a look at the schools and participants that are scheduled to compete. (Note: Students are listed with the event for which they’ve qualified, their mark and the state seeding.)


2A STATE MEET (Friday)

BANDYS

The girls team finished second at last week’s 2A West Regional, while the boys came in third... Alex Reavis is the Trojans’ best hope at an individual state title. He won the high jump at this year’s 2A indoor state meet and finished second at the boys 2A outdoor championship last year. Reavis has the best 2A mark in the state this spring... Senior Sarah Faith McAllister will compete in her third state meet. In the 3,200-meter run, she placed sixth in both her freshman and sophomore year, while she finished ninth in the 1,600m in 2016.

Naeousha Ramseur is in her second state meet. She ran a leg in two relays last year and finished 12th in the 100m. She, Na’Mya Hector and Jada Perkins wound up 11th in last year’s girls 4x100m relay and 12th the 4x200m... Raheem Carson qualified for his third state meet. In the 100m, he place 11th in 2017 and 13th last year.

DRAUGHN

The Wildcats’ lone participant will be one to watch. Leanna Seagraves will cap her track and field career this week with her fourth state meet in the pole vault. As a freshman, Seagraves won the 2A state meet with a jump of 9 feet. She upped that to 10 feet in 2017 and finished in a tie, but lost a tiebreaker. Last year, Seagraves went to 11 feet, but wound up second. She will battle Surry Central’s Sarah Brown for the right to be called a champion.

Chioma Asiegbunam is in her third state meet. She was a part of two relays in 2017 before competing in individual races last year. Asiegbunam was fifth in the 100m and eighth in the 200m in 2018. She was also a part of the 4x100m state title-winning relay... Avery Scott won the 200m and long jump at regionals... Riley Liprell was sixth in the boys 800m last year.

Though the Wolves will send just three athletes to the state meet, the lone girl participating has a shot at a state title. Emily Shain has the NCHSAA’s top throw in the shot put this year at 43-4. This is her third state meet after finishing fifth in the shot put in 2017 and fourth last year. She also competed in the discus, ending up in 12th... Daniel Hopkins won the 2A West Regional in cross-country last fall.

NORTH LINCOLN

After sweeping the 2A West Regional last weekend, North Lincoln is a strong contender for state titles. Boys and girls combined, the Knights had 28 total qualifiers come out of regionals for the state meet. It is the largest number in the 2A class and the second-most among all schools. North Lincoln trails only Cuthbertson, which has 43... The Knights are likely to dominate the distance events. Angie Allen has the best time of all NCHSAA schools in both the 1,600m (5:07.99) and 3,200m (10:52.91). She finished second at last fall’s 2A state cross-country meet. Her teammate, Alyssa Galvin, was third at the same meet… North Lincoln is the defending state champ in the girls 4x800m relay... Among the boys, Jason Thomson has the state’s best 2A time in the 1,600m (4:18.34) and Brian Risse has the best 3,200m time (9:14.16). The boys 4x800m time is also the best among 2A teams (7:54.32)... Jake Soorus has the state’s best 2A mark in the discus (173-3). He enters Friday’s meet with the top seed in both discus and shot put.

As a freshman, Lariyah Clark has already shown a bright future with her results this year. At last week’s 2A Midwest Regional, Clark was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump... Chandon Smith and Ryan Tenor both participated in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays that finished in the top eight. Smith is the second seed in the 300m hurdles.

ALEXANDER CENTRAL

The Cougars’ boys finished the 3A West Regional in fourth and will carry several athletes that have state title hopes. Lyndon Strickland held the NCHSAA’s top mark in the discus much of the year before that was eclipsed. He is in his third state meet. As a sophomore in 2017, Strickland was third in the discus and eighth in the shot put at the 4A level. He matched the third-place finish in the discus at the 3A meet last year and paired it with a fourth-place finish in the shot put... Cooper Castellaw finished seventh in the 3,200m run a year ago at the 3A meet and won the same race at last week’s 3A West Regional.

A strong showing by the Watauga distance runners put the Pioneers’ girls in fourth place at last week’s 3A West Regional. Emma Brown paved the way by qualifying for two events in hurdles, as well as part of two relays. Brown was 13th in last year’s 100m hurdles... Sophia Ritter will go to state for the third straight year. As a freshman in 2016, she wound up 14th in the 3,200m. A year later, she improved to third in the same event... Sam Sappington was the top finisher at regionals among the boys, taking second in the discus.

The Titans will send their first field athlete to the state meet since 2013 as Cierra Flack took a third-place finish at last week’s 4A West Regional in the shot put.

Last year, Carter Lewis made the first appearance at a state meet by a South Caldwell track athlete, male or female, since 2013. Jack Seagle is seeded 13th in the 4A class in the long jump after a third-place finish at regionals.
