Alexander Central names interim coach

Alexander Central High School named Larry Sharpe the interim head coach for the girls varsity basketball team on Friday, according to a press release from the school.

The position was vacated March 1 after Jonathan Winkler stepped down following two seasons leading the Cougars. Sharpe has served as the head JV coach and an assistant to the varsity team for the past 10 years.

“With the summer fast approaching and an off-season workout plan needing to be in place, we feel that naming coach Sharpe as the interim head coach is in the best interest of our women’s basketball program,” athletic director Nathan Robinson said via the release. “Coach Sharpe will be running the summer workout program and will be in charge of organizing camps as well.”

The release also stated that the search for a full-time head coach is still ongoing. Those interested in applying can contact Robinson at nrobinson@alexander.k12.nc.us.

Coaches are encouraged to submit results to sports@hickoryrecord.com with detailed information, including scores, individual statistics, team record and upcoming games.
