The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team got a record-setting performance from pitcher Logan Bender to beat visiting Fayetteville Tech 1-0 on Saturday, according to a press release from CVCC Athletics.

Bender struck out 18 hitters, breaking the previous program record of 14 held by four different players. The sophomore right-hander allowed just one hit and one walk in eight shutout innings for the Red Hawks (32-19 overall, 15-7 Region X).

CVCC’s offense was also held in check, recording just two hits through seven innings. R.J. Conner drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to score Vinny Consolo for the game’s only run. Grant Tilley hit a double as one of the Red Hawks’ three hits in the game.

The final two games of the series against Fayetteville Tech were cancelled due to inclement weather. CVCC will next compete in the Region X/SE District tournament Friday at Pitt Community College.

Post 48 sets dates for baseball tryout

The Hickory American Legion Post 48 will have baseball tryouts this week, according to a press release from Post 48.

Tryouts are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field. Interested players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and a signed parent form.

L-R track and field competes in Tennessee Challenge

The Lenoir-Rhyne men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday in Knoxville, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

The men’s 4x100 meter relay team had the best finish of the day as the team of Kaynmon Maddox, JaTay Culliver, P.J. Lotharp and Lucas Besong crossed in second place with a time of 40.61 seconds. Kennedy Conner placed fourth in the women’s high jump after clearing a mark of 5 feet, 3.25 inches. Destiny Gayton (4-11.5) finished sixth in that same event.

The Bears will next compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne Final Qualifier hosted May 12.

Hickory Parks & Rec to hold basketball camps

The Hickory Parks and Recreation Department has announced dates for its 2019 Greater Hickory Metro Basketball Camp and ELITE Academy, according to a press release from the department.

The basketball camp will be held July 8-12 at the Highland Recreation Center. The camp is for boys and girls who will be going into the first through ninth grades and will focus on skill and fundamental drills while including competitive contests and team games. The boys camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, with the girls camp running from 1-5 p.m. The cost is $70 per person.

The ELITE Academy will be held July 15-19 at the Highland Recreation Center. This is for boys and girls going into the sixth through 12th grades who are serious about wishing to excel at the sport. The academy will be led by high school and college coaches, professional skill development instructors and professional players. The academy runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily and the cost is $70 per person.

CVCC volleyball announces summer camps

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team has set dates for its upcoming summer camps, according to a press release from CVCC Athletics.

The Red Hawks will hold a series of camps the week of June 24-28 at the Tarlton Complex. From June 24-26, they will host a Basic Skills Camp (8-11 a.m. daily) for players in the first through fifth grades, an Intermediate Skills Camp (12-3 p.m. daily) for athletes in the sixth through 10th grades and an Advanced Skills Camp (4-7 p.m. daily) for players in the ninth through 12th grades.

An All Skills Camp (8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily) and an ELITE Camp (2-7 p.m. daily) will also be held on both June 27 and June 28.

Each camp costs $125. All campers will receive a Red Hawks camp shirt as well as a daily snack for camps June 24-26 or lunch/dinner for camps June 27-28. All camps have a maximum registration of 50 players.

Additionally, the Red Hawks Mini Clinics will return this summer. A serving clinic will be held June 24 from 11 a.m. until noon and 3-4 p.m., as well as June 27 from 1-2 p.m. A position clinic will take place June 25 from 11 a.m. until noon and 3-4 p.m., June 26 from 11 a.m. until noon and 3-4 p.m. and June 28 from 1-2 p.m. Each session costs $25 per player.

L-R men’s hoops to host youth camp

Lenoir-Rhyne men’s basketball coach Everick Sullivan will host a youth camp in June, according to a press release from LRU Athletics.

The camp, which is for rising kindergarten through eighth-grade boys and girls, will instruct players in five-on-five play as well as fundamental skills and drill work. Sessions will be held June 21-22 and June 24-25. The cost is $100 per session or $160 for both sessions, with a $10 discount to parents who register more than one child and a $20 discount to Lenoir-Rhyne faculty and staff.
