Following one of its most successful seasons in program history, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program released its 2019 schedule on Friday.

The Red Hawks’ fall slate features 38 regular-season matches, including 14 home matches. CVCC also plays in four road tournaments in four different states.

“We are excited to release our 2019 schedule and are looking forward to another great year of competition,” CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson said. “We always love hosting some of our local NCAA schools for our preseason scrimmage in the Tarlton Complex. We are also looking forward to our annual tournaments with Owens, Pasco and Wallace State. We missed out on our New York City tournament at Monroe College last year because of an incoming hurricane, so it is nice to have that invitational back on the schedule this fall.”

Catawba Valley kicks off its 2019 volleyball season on Aug. 24 at home with a quad preseason scrimmage, which will feature matches against Lenoir-Rhyne (8 a.m.), Catawba College (9:30 a.m.), Lees-McRae College (1 p.m.) and Belmont Abbey College (2:30 p.m.).

The first regular-season match for the Red Hawks takes place on Aug. 27 against conference newcomer Southwest Virginia Community College at 6:30 p.m.

Following that initial home contest, CVCC will be on the road for 13 consecutive matches, including playing in three traditional road tournaments – the Owens Express Invitational in Perrysburg, Ohio, on Aug. 30-31, the Pasco-Hernando State College Bobcat Invitational in New Port Richey, Fla., on Sept. 6-7 and the Monroe College Invitational in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Sept. 13-14.

Also returning to the Red Hawks’ schedule this year will be two home staple events – the sixth annual Region X-Travaganza on Sept. 20-21 and sixth annual Valley Invitational on Oct. 4-5. Both events will be held at the Tarlton Complex.

“It’s always nice to play in front of our Red Hawks family at our Regional X-travaganza, which will be held in September, and we will also host our 6th annual Catawba Valley Invitational at the beginning of October,” Hudson said.

Catawba Valley wraps up its regular season with a road volleyball match against Walters State on Oct. 29 before starting Region 10 tournament play on Nov. 1 at Surry Community College.

This year’s Region 10 champion will face the Region 7 champion in the District O championship match, which will be held Nov. 9 at the Tarlton Complex.

The winner of that match will represent District O in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII national tournament in Charleston, W.Va.

“As usual, we’ve got a busy and competitive schedule, but I know our girls are excited for the challenge,” Hudson said.

The Red Hawks are coming off a 2018 season in which they won 36 matches, including three for the first time ever at the NJCAA DII national tournament.

CVCC also claimed its 11th region title (seventh in a row) and eighth district championship in volleyball last fall.
