Like most Americans, I have been shocked and saddened by the images of desperate migrants arriving by the thousands at the U.S. border. In response to the crisis, President Trump announced in March that the U.S. would halt all foreign aid to Central America.
This decision is not only inhumane, it is misguided. Many people are fleeing problems that US foreign aid helps to combat: violence, disease, hunger, and poverty. Organizations like International Justice Mission have leveraged U.S. aid to support the Guatemalan public justice system in tripling arrests for child rape. When communities are safe, families are more likely to stay there.
The administration should make an exemption for humanitarian aid to Central America, and Congress should hold them to this. American border security and the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world are at stake.
