CHARLOTTE/HICKORY Dexter Grant Thompson, 62, of Charlotte, formerly of Hickory, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, following a brief illness, at Levine & Dickson Hospice at Aldergate in Charlotte. The sixth child born to the late Walter and Gladys Saddler Thompson April 28, 1957, Dexter was a loving devoted father as well as a physicist, poet, published author and patented inventor. Dexter was a 1975 graduate of Hickory High School and attended UNC Asheville. He grew up at Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church and attended St. Luke UMC and House of Prayer of Charlotte. Dexter is survived by his children, son, Aaron Stokes of Statesville; daughters, Devonne Burton-Thompson and Ivana Burton-Thompson, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Allen Thompson of Charlotte, Gregory (Brenda Corpening) Thompson and Dirk M.(Carolyn) Thompson both of Hickory; sisters, Deborah Jessie of Connelly Springs, Karen Regina (Barton Sudderth) Thompson of Smyrna, Ga., and Monica Lisa (Henry Suggs) Thompson of Wilson; along with a number of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m., with the Revs. Cassandra Rawls and Benjamin Sudderth officiating. Family will receive friends Saturday, June 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Walter/Gladys Memorial Chapel at Dirk M. Thompson Mortuary. Burial will be held Monday, June 10, at York Memorial Park in Charlotte. Dirk M. Thompson Mortuary is serving the Dexter Thompson family, 828-323-1980.
