HICKORY James Phillip "J.P." Roland, 72, of 12th Ave. SW in Hickory, passed away Monday, June 3, 2019. He was born May 4, 1947, in Catawba County, to the late Rev. George Roland Sr. and Estelle Mitchell Roland. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a graduate of the Ridgeview High School Class of 1966 where he was a drum major for the band, and he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He also worked for Bell South in California and Centel Telephone Company before retiring. He was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie Roland; and one brother, George Roland Jr. He leaves to cherish loving memoires his siblings, Wilbert (Karvel) Roland of Hickory, Alice R. Davis and Shirlene (Vince) Lynch, both of Greensboro, William "Mack" Roland and Faye Joann Roland Vincent, both of Hickory; aunt, Carrie Mitchell of Boston, Mass.; uncle, Allen (Bernice) Mitchell Sr. of Hickory; a host of nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. The memorial service will be held Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m., at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 416 2nd Ave. SE in Hickory with the Rev. Lamont Reeves and Rev. Dr. Howard Woods officiating.
