Marshall "Dean" Reed HICKORY Marshall "Dean" Reed, 81, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Trinity Ridge. Born July 19, 1937, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Pauline and Henry Reed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Jim Reed and wife, Ruby; and sister, Sue Reed Franklin. Dean was an active member of West Hickory Baptist Church. He was a godly christian man and a lover of Southern Gospel Music that traveled with several quartets. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a special friend to many that will be greatly missed by each of them. Dean was a veteran of the U.S. Army, before retiring from Barnhardt Manufacturing. He was also a member of the Hildebran Lions Club. He was a hero and courageous fighter due to the loss of his eyesight and dementia that he developed years ago. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Stirewalt Reed of the home; son, Kevin Dean Reed; daughter, Lisa Reed Wolfe and husband, John, all of Hickory; grandchildren, Austin, Aaron and Michaela Hildebrand, whom he loved dearly; three sisters, Margaret Reed Spencer and husband, Buck, of Granite Falls, Marjorie Reed Barkley of Hickory, Wanda Reed Childers and husband, Oliver, of Vale; a brother, Edwin Reed of Bethlehem; and a sister-in-law, Gerri Reed of Conover. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14, at West Hickory Baptist Church with the the Rev. Scott Frady officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the church, prior to the service. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial park with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the Caldwell County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Hickory Baptist Church; Hildebran Lions Club; or the Alzheimer's Association. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at Trinity Ridge Nursing Home for the extra love, support and care given to Dean during his stay there.
