HICKORY Doris Martin Dabney, 93, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Carillon Assisted Living of Newton. Born July 16, 1925, in King William County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Percy G. Martin and Mary Gouldman Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Elijah Dabney; and two brothers, William and Douglas Martin. Doris was a member of The First Baptist Church in Hickory. In 1943, she graduated from King William High School, King William County, Va. That same year, she went to work for The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. and attended their business school in Richmond, Va. On Dec. 4, 1946, she married Joseph Elijah Dabney. In 1965, they moved to Hickory, and she worked for J.P. Stevens and Hickory Furniture Mart. She is survived by daughters, Linda Rowe and husband, Robert, of Hickory, Diane Hemphill and husband, Tim, of Chocowinity; five grandchildren Evan Rowe of Cornelius, Karen Rowe Bryant and husband, Mackie, of Charlotte, Brett Hemphill and wife, Kim, of Wake Forest, Brooks Hemphill and wife, Erica, of Wake Forest, and Brae Hemphill of Red Cliff, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Jackson, Lydia, and Eleanor Hemphill. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory. The family wishes to thank all the staff members of Carillon Assisted Living Center in Newton for their wonderful care of their mother, and also Carolina Caring Hospice of Catawba County.
