NEWTON Floy Mae McDonald Abernethy, 87, of Newton passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Carolina Caring in Newton. Floy Mae was born March 18, 1932, in Catawba County to the late Gudger Charlie and Myrtle Jones McDonald. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Newton. Floy Mae retired from American & Efird after 21 1/2 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Vernon Ben Abernethy; two sisters, Ruby Clinton, Mary Campbell; and two brothers, Charlie "Rufus" McDonald and infant brother, J.B. McDonald. She is survived by three daughters, Gail Little and husband, Bobby, and Dean Eades and husband, Derek, both of Newton and Jean Bolick and husband, Jamie, of Lenoir; son, Neal Abernethy of Newton; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Laverne Bolick of Newton; and sister, Polly Hull, and husband, Gerald, of Georgia. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, June 6), at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Newton, with Pastor Derek Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 3:45 p.m., at the church, prior to the service. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's UMC, 3764 N.
