A woman remains in the hospital after being shot by her father-in-law in Lenoir on Saturday afternoon, according to a press release from the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 2:46 p.m., deputies found Sheba Lynn Clontz, 36, on the back porch of a residence in the 2600 block of Spears Road with an apparent gunshot wound to the face.
Investigators believe Sheba Clontz’s father-in-law, Robert Carroll Clontz, 77, died by suicide. He was found near an outbuilding to the side of the residence and was in possession of a 20-gauge shotgun, the release states.
After being stabilized by Caldwell County EMS, Sheba Clontz was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where she remains in stable yet critical condition, according to the release.
The investigation revealed that the incident occurred as a result of an argument over a child custody issue, the sheriff’s office stated in the release.
