Newton police and the Newton Fire Department are investigating a fire that claimed a home north of downtown Wednesday morning.

Police are treating the fire as arson.

According to a Newton Police Department press release, police responded just after midnight to 408 E. 26th Street.

Once on the scene, firefighters told police the fire was suspicious. The release said all services, including electricity, were disconnected from the house prior to the fire.

The fire was started in the back bedroom of the house and burned throughout. Investigators declared the home a total loss, according to the release.
