Two former Alexander Central High School athletes are the newest additions to the school’s coaching staffs.

Jon Presnell, director of the Alexander County Parks and Recreation Department and a 1997 graduate of Alexander Central, has been hired as the coach of the women’s basketball team, according to a release from the high school.

Presnell succeeds Jonathan Winkler in the role. Winkler resigned in March after two years coaching the team, according to the release.

Presnell played on the men’s varsity team for two years when he was a student.

He previously served as an assistant coach and head coach for the junior varsity men’s team in 1999 and 2000, respectively, according to the release.

Presnell coached the East Alexander Middle School men’s basketball team from 2002 to 2006.

“I am grateful for the confidence they have in me to hire me as the next head coach,” Presnell said via the release. “I look forward to the challenge of building a strong basketball program as well as working with everyone involved.”

Mindy Severt, a former Alexander Central cheerleader who graduated in 2006, is the new cheerleading coach.

Severt was the head cheer coach at South Iredell High School from 2010 to 2014, according to a school release.

She is currently a family and consumer sciences CTE teacher at Alexander Central.

“I am excited to be able to give back to the program that gave me my foundation and love for cheering,” Severt said via the release. “I look forward to coaching all the girls in our cheer program.”
