A Hickory Public Schools bus ran a red light and struck a minivan Monday morning in Hickory, sending two people to the hospital.

Hickory Police Officer Bryson Grier said bus 341 was traveling west on 12th Avenue NE and attempted to turn at the N.C. 127 intersection during a red light.

A Honda minivan was traveling north in the left lane on N.C. 127and was hit on its right side, spinning the vehicle into the south turning lane.

“We had an adult and a child taken to the hospital,” said Grier. Grier said the adult and child were in the minivan and their injuries were minor.

The bus driver was cited for running the red light and the other driver was cited for a suspended license, Hickory Police Victim and Community Services Coordinator Chrystal Dieter said in an email.

Beverly Snowden, director of communications for Hickory Public Schools, says bus 341 was operated by Mitzi Powell.

“No children were on the bus,” Snowden said.

Bus 341 was headed to pick up Southwest Primary and Longview Elementary students and was not carrying any students at the time of the accident.

Bus 7 took the students home Monday afternoon, according to Snowden.

Hickory Public Schools was operating on a two-hour delay Monday morning.
