Here's a list of area summer camps and events for athletes.

Maiden Basketball Camp

The Maiden Recreation Center will host a basketball camp July 17-19 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the recreation center’s gym for rising third through sixth-grade boys and girls.

The camp is open to the first 40 participants to sign up. The cost is $5 per participant.

The camp will focus on honing basic basketball skills through games and drills.

Snacks will be provided each day and a small pizza award ceremony will close out the camp on Friday.

Maiden Volleyball Camp

The Maiden Recreation Center will host a volleyball camp July 24-26 at 12:30 p.m. for all rising third through sixth-grade girls.

The camp is open to the first 30 participants to sign up. The cost is $5 per participant.

The camp will focus on honing basic volleyball skills through games and drills.

Snacks will be provided each day and a small pizza award ceremony will close out the camp on Friday.

Hickory Basketball Tournament

Hickory Parks and Recreation will host Summertime Shootout Basketball Tournament at the Highland Recreation Center on July 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for ages 18 and up.

Each team can have a maximum of eight players and will cost $50 per team to register.

Newton Football Skills Clinic

Newton Parks and Recreation will host a football skills clinic on July 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westside/Jaycee Park for boys and girls ages 4 to 12.

Participants will learn football fundamentals and coordination skills across several stations set up according to ages.

All participants will receive a t-shirt and a lunch. A $5 donation is suggested from participants.

Newton Parks and Recreation Department and Catawba County Hornets participation waivers are required and are available at the Newton Recreation Center.

Football Camp

St. Stephens High School will host its annual “Little Indian Football Camp" for rising first through eighth-graders from July 29-31 at 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the St. Stephens High School football field.

The camp will include an emphasis on fundamentals, competition and teamwork.

The cost of the camp is $40. It will cost only $20 for those registered to play St. Stephens Optimist Football.

To register, arrive at the football field on the first day of the camp, July 29, starting at 5:30 p.m.
