Students in Hickory Public Schools participated in a statewide tornado drill Wednesday morning as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, according to a press release from Hickory Public Schools.

At 9:30 a.m, the National Weather Service sent out a test message to all schools in North Carolina to practice their emergency plans, according to the National Weather Service website.

Hickory High students walked out of class and took their safety positions in the areas that have been deemed as the safest location of the school facility, the press release said.

According to the National Weather Service, if each North Carolina resident would take a few moments during Sever Weather Preparedness Week to learn about severe weather safety and implement a safety plan, then everyone would be better off when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes inevitably strike North Carolina and the likelihood of injury and fatalities caused by severe weather could be minimized.
