Phase one of Newton’s $10 million downtown revitalization project is complete.
The project, which is organized in four phases, began last summer when workers unearthed outdated infrastructure on Main Avenue between 2nd Street and A Street.
Those who travel on Main Avenue can now experience a refreshed look, sidewalk-oriented traffic signals, bike lanes, shorter crosswalks and the new Frank & Sue Jones Amphitheatre.
Phase two, which includes A Street and enhancements to Yount Park, is not scheduled to begin until September, according to Newton Public Information Officer Alex Frick.
The project is scheduled to be completed fall of 2021. The first and largest phase cost $3.3 million, and the next three phases are estimated to cost $7 million.
