Now that the Thanksgiving turkey has been carved and devoured for multiple meals, it is time to put on that Santa hat, grab a little tinsel and dive head-first into the red-and-green holiday season. From festive lights to joyful tunes and visits with the jolly old elf, Iredell County offers the entire family plenty of options for ensuring the Christmas spirit is alive within everyone.

If your home already looks like a winter wonderland, you're undoubtedly eager to celebrate the season as soon as this evening. Join Mitchell Community College's Jazz Ensemble for a holiday concert at 7 p.m. tonight at MCC's Shearer Hall in Statesville, 500 W. Broad St. The event is free to the public and will feature a variety of jazz arrangements, including “The Christmas Waltz” and “It's The Holiday Season.” This holiday performance is one of several at MCC in the coming weeks. Check the Event Calendar for additional listings that feature the musical talents of local students and community members.

Friday is filled to the brim with festivities for elves and angels of all ages. In Mooresville, from 2-8 p.m., meander toward the Charles Mack Citizen Center, 215 N. Main St., for the Mooresville Christmas Bazaar. As children create hand-crafted gifts for Grandma and Grandpa, Mom and Dad can peruse gift-wrapping stations, holiday how-to clinics and enjoy a variety of entertainment. Town fun does not end there. On Friday evenings through Dec. 14, including tomorrow, enjoy wagon rides, visits with Santa, holiday music, Christmas Tree Lane and other activities along Main and Broad streets from 6-8:30 p.m.

Downtown Statesville will also kick off its weekly seasonal celebration on Friday, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The Holiday Shop & Stroll features a live Nativity show, holiday carolers, Statesville City Hall tours, Santa visits, horse-drawn carriages and much more. For those seeking to gift purchases from downtown businesses, doors will remain open a bit later on Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Full details — including additional activities — are available at www.downtownstatesville.org.

Few Christmas seasons are complete without “The Nutcracker.” The Academy of Dance & Fine Arts offers three showings this weekend — Friday, 7 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Mooresville High School, 659 E. Center St., Mooresville — of the holiday ballet classic. The final performance, the Academy's “Holiday Benefit,” will also feature raffle baskets, local musicians and other guests, food and a variety of fun with all proceeds benefiting the Iredell County Chapter of S.C.A.N. (Stop Child Abuse Now). Tickets for all three events are $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-11.

Have your kids prepared their lists for Santa Claus yet? Are they aching to explain how well they've behaved this year? You have two opportunities on Saturday to introduce the little ones to the big man in red. At Troutman Elementary School, 8-11 a.m., feast on an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with Old Saint Nick, sponsored and hosted by the Rotary Club of Troutman. Admission is $7 per adult and $5 for children ages 6-12. Kids younger than 6 eat free. Bring a few extra dollars with you for the silent auction or perhaps a toy donation or non-perishable food item to toss into the donation boxes.

Also on Saturday, ready your children to meet Santa at the Town of Mooresville's 4th Annual Children's Holiday Party. Held at the Charles Mack Citizen Center, from 12-2 p.m., the event is free and no reservation is necessary for snacks and a free photo — courtesy of LunahZon Photography — with the big guy.

In addition to its student-focused holiday performances, MCC will present a “Walk-in” Messiah Concert on Sunday, 3 p.m., at the campus' Shearer Hall in Statesville. As December dawns, come share your vocal talent and sing about the reason for the season during this presentation of Handel's “Messiah.” A rehearsal will be held on Dec. 1 at Shearer Hall, 3 p.m., and interested singers are asked to attend. Event is free and open to the public.

This upcoming weekend is bountiful with holiday celebrations to add a little jolly to everyone's post-Thanksgiving days. If you are not yet ready to don the antlers and rock around the Christmas tree, keep your eyes posted to the Event Calendar for numerous upcoming festivities throughout December, including the 2012 Statesville Christmas Parade on Dec. 9 at 3 p.m., Santa Cruises at Queen's Landing in Mooresville on Dec. 9 and 16, and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!” by Theatre! Statesville from Dec. 14-16. Also, kick the cheer into gear whenever you choose by visiting “Downtown's Holiday Light Spectacular” on the Mooresville Town Hall lawn, featuring more than 75,000 lights set to music.

Whether you begin to celebrate today or wait another week (or three), I wish you the merriest of holiday seasons.
