Congressman: We spend too much on social programs

HICKORY – The median family makes less today than it did in 1989, but the matter rests not with the top 1 percent, but with making life work, U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) said Friday at a Pancakes and Politics event at Crowne Plaza hosted by the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce.

McHenry said the median family makes $51,017 a year, while in 1989, the median family made $51,600 a year. One additional problem is the rising cost of living, McHenry said.
