HICKORY N.C. – A representative of First Security Insurance reported Wednesday that a “substantial amount of money” had been electronically wired out of one of the business’ bank accounts without the company’s consent.

Sometime between Nov. 20 and Wednesday, suspects wired the money to a Chinese bank with offices in New York City, according to Hickory Police Investigator Dustin Nowatka. The thieves apparently gained access to the company’s account and routing numbers and were able to transfer the money out of the account.
