HICKORY N.C. — The salvation of the tower at Hickory Regional Airport is not a done deal. In fact, air traffic control towers across the nation are awaiting word from the Federal Aviation Administration on their fate.

“The FAA still hasn’t given us the word,” said Lezli Kolkun, air traffic manager at the Hickory tower. The furloughs (for air traffic controllers at major airports) are over, but we’re still looking at June 15 as our closing date. We think – we hope – we’ll stay open, but the FAA hasn’t said anything yet.”
