MORGANTON, NC – As children make wishes for gifts on their Christmas list, some families in Burke County struggle to make the wishes come true.
Area agencies are stepping in to help through Angel Trees.
“In Burke County, we have 276 kids (who are part of the Angel Tree program),” said Windy Bowman, case worker and Angel Tree program manager for the Salvation Army of Burke County. “We do newborn to age 12.”
Bowman said the concept is simple.
“We take applications. We put the kids on an angel, the person picks for that child,” she said. “We have an actual person on that card.”
The Salvation Army provides the angel ornaments for local businesses that are interested in hosting an Angel Tree.
The angel ornaments include a card in the shape of an angel with that child’s name, age and gift wish.
“We would love to have all 276 angels adopted,” she said. “That would be great.”
Those who pick up an angel ornament are asked to bring the unwrapped gift for that child to the Salvation Army Family Store at 412-A W. Fleming Drive in Morganton.
The Salvation Army ensures that each child receives his or her gift in time for Christmas.
Currently, the Coffee House Waffle Shop off Interstate 40 Exit 100 is hosting an Angel Tree as is Timberwoods and Friday Friends and the Salvation Army Family Store.
“We want to make sure that all kids are provided for at the holidays,” Bowman said.
Other local agencies take part in Angel Trees in the community.
Homes for Hearts, Inc. has decorated an Angel Tree with angel ornaments. Each angel ornament represents one of the 145 children currently in Burke County Department of Social Services custody. They are asking that each older child be given $100 gift cards and younger children receive four gifts, worth $25 to $30.
The angel ornaments through Homes for Hearts, Inc. can be found at A.J’s Steakhouse, State Employees Credit Union on Carbon City Road, Carol’s Hair Infinity on N.C. 181 and LaFrance Wellness Center, located on North Green Street. Homes for Hearts, Inc. asks all gifts and donations be provided by Sunday. For information on the Homes for Hearts, Inc. Angel Tree, contact Linda DuBry at 828-439-2037.
