It will be like old times for a pair of former Lake Norman High swimmers during this week’s NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships.
Former prep teammates Haley Powell and Logan Heck will be among the elite college swimmers competing at the national championships in Indianapolis.
Powell, a sophomore, will be representing her Florida State University program, while Heck, just a freshman, will do the same donning his University of North Carolina program’s ties.
Competition begins Thursday.
Powell and Heck are the first swimmers from Lake Norman to qualify for the NCAA Division I national championship meet.
Powell will be part of her Lady Seminoles’ 200-meter freestyle relay team, one she helped lead as the one handling the anchor leg to a recent silver medal during the course of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship meet. The time crafted by the foursome, which also set a new program mark, was also fast enough to merit a national finals bid.
As for Heck, he placed well enough in his specialty event, the 100-meter freestyle, during the men’s ACC title meet to also earn a national bid and help become part of a 10-swimmer contingent from the Tar Heels roster to also land a national championship invite.
Competition in the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championship meet will continue through Saturday.
