A mechanic with Iredell-Statesville Schools was arrested Monday, charged with stealing gasoline from the school bus garage.

Jay Elliott Godfrey, 28, of Driftwood Drive, Mooresville, was charged with larceny by employee, said Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson.

He is accused of taking about 50 gallons of gasoline from the school bus garage during an approximately month-long period.

Anderson said school officials contacted the police department on March 13 after observing Godfrey filling containers with gasoline and placing them in his personal vehicle.

Anderson said Godfrey would put gasoline in containers while fueling the school system vehicle and then alter the log sheets.

Investigator Al Pettit began an investigation after the thefts were reported to police and then obtained a warrant for Godfrey’s arrest.

His bond was set at $1,500.

A message seeking comment from the school system wasn't immediately returned.
